BEST Book Apps for Kids

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 14 September 2013 0 komentar
For Apple, Android and Other Platforms

During the past week drove by one of the middle schools in our local district where the marquis on the front lawn read “Progress Reports due the week of September 16th.” Are we really approaching the mid-point of the first quarter? Yes, we are!

If you are like most parents and teachers, you may already be wrestling with the issues of homework and long term projects for your children or students. In fact, many students have already received their first book report assignments of the school year. How can you make these book report projects less “painful” and actually more enjoyable for students?

We think one good option might be to include or allow more e-books and audio books in the offerings made to the students. In fact, e-books, apps and audio books very often do an excellent job of addressing the needs of students' different learning styles, especially those of struggling readers and learners. The tech devices on which these digital books and apps are read can sometimes compensate for the issues frequently associated with florescent lighting (which can cause issues for some challenged readers) or allow for other text manipulation to improve reading comfort and success. Audio books have long been known to benefit auditory learners in a significant way.

This week, we are presenting here what we believe are some good resources for FREE and low-cost e-books and book apps for children and teens. With school budgets as they are right now and families wishing to be frugal in the current economy, these lists and selections (for various digital platforms) may be just what are needed for the current and future book report projects your children or students are assigned.

Note: Please stay tuned. Next week’s article here will offer online resources for audio books.

Happy reading, everyone!

BEST Brain-Training Apps for More FOCUS!

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 27 April 2013 0 komentar
There is currently a great deal of buzz in educational circles about something called brain training. What is brain training? One definition for this term is “learning ways to increase your intelligence, memory, ability to think, etc.” (Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus, published by Cambridge University Press).

How does one go about “training a brain” in order to increase the ability to focus, think or improve other executive functions? Many current methods of brain training often involve the use of digital apps targeted to address one specific or a group of cognitive skills. These may be served up via iPads and other iOS platforms or Android and similar devices.

Some of these brain-training apps are scientifically validated with documented research and can actually offer genuine cognitive training and/or even remediation or improvement programs for such issues as ADD, ADHD and other challenges that affect cognitive ability. Other “brain-training” apps are provided for their educational or entertainment value only.

This week, we have gathered here numerous brain-training apps and lists of such apps that will also include information about their scientific validation (when available). We hope these resources will provide parents, teachers and other adults some viable options for significant brain training!

Apps to Shorten the Road to Stroke Recovery

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 30 Maret 2013 0 komentar
Developmental optometrists and occupational therapists continue to tell us that the Reading Focus Cards (Patent 7,565,759) help some of their patients recovering from stroke. These low-tech, reading tools can help patients with alexia to re-learn how to read. In addition, these Reading Focus Cards are providing help for patients with Parkinson'sand even dementia, helping them to focus and concentrate with greater success.

We also know that technology today, such as e-tablets and e-readers, is helping to level the playing field for all readers and learners with special needs. The access and use of this technology are not only advantageous for these readers and learners but is and will continue to be a great benefit to all of us. The iPad and Android apps are improving the quality of life for so many, and as a result, an increasing number of individuals with special needs are becoming a little more independent, a little more self-sufficient. This new independence will continue to be advantageous for all of society.

Stroke recovery is no different. Many of those who have experienced the devastating effects of a stroke can attest to the strong need and desire to regain independence, but the struggle can be a long road. However, with the new technology of apps, the road back to independence is being shortened considerably. When the technology of an iPad or a Kindle is combined with the Reading Focus Cards, recovering stroke patients challenged with alexia can benefit even more with the improved focus and concentration the tools provide.

This week, we wanted to give our readers some lists of iPad and Android apps particularly helpful for stroke recovery patients. It is apparent that at the time of this writing, there are considerably more iPad apps for this particular patient population than there are Android apps. This will mostly change as apps in both formats will increasingly be needed. We hope you will find the resources gathered here to benefit someone you know who is facing these unique challenges.

ADHD? Discover Those Strengths & Build on Them!

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 01 Desember 2012 0 komentar
If you are the parent of a child or teen with ADD, you may often fret over the challenges your child faces at school and at home with the family, concerned about the child's future. If you are an educator in a classroom having one or more students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, you may find that you spend considerably more time thinking about how to address the negative behaviors associated with the ADHD than you do about how to teach these students. If you are an adult challenged with ADHD, you may find yourself spending a great deal of time thinking about your daily struggles and weaknesses. These are not unusual situations; however, there is a way to “turn the boat around” in thought and action for children or adults with some form of ADHD.

It is almost always easier to think about the “negative side” of a situation. It takes little energy and no productive thinking to “give in” mentally to “The Dark Side” when thinking about a situation, rarely if ever arriving at a good solution. This can certainly be true when we talk about ADHD. However, you might remember an old song with the lyrics:

“Accentuate the positive. Eee-lim-inate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative. Don’t mess with Mr. In-Between.”

Well, that’s certainly the advice we have to share with you here.

You might find it a little difficult to do, but consider your child, your students or yourself challenged with ADHD as persons with strengths in addition to the struggles associated with attention deficits. It is even a good idea to make a list of the strengths of each individual, and that may mean YOU. Yes, you DO have strengths. These may be special talents or gifts such as a great sense of humor, the ability to talk or interact well with others or special artistic skills. There are other talents less tangible but very valuable that are gifts as well: honesty and integrity, the ability to be a team player or to be compassionate and generous when others are hurting.

Whatever those gifts are, they are a person’s strengths. When that person is challenged with ADHD, acknowledge those strengths, gifts and talents and celebrate them. Then focus and build on them, diminishing the weaknesses associated with the ADHD. That is not to say that those symptoms are to be ignored or forgotten. No, it means that the emphasis of thinking is on what is positive.

Get involved with or provide activities that will capitalize on those strengths. Allow yourself or the person with ADHD to “shine” as a result of using those special gifts in a carefully chosen activity or exercise. You will find that your child, your students or you will experience increased self-esteem, which in turn will positively impact learning, achievement and daily life experiences. In other words, ACCENTuate the POSITIVE---with ADHD!

Many of these visitors are teachers who seek practical and usable information about dyslexia not provided by their school districts and professional organizations. Still others are adults who have been challenged with reading issues most of their lives and continue to search for tools and strategies to improve focus, concentration, comprehension and retention.

GREAT Apps to Help Teach Reading

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 07 Oktober 2012 0 komentar
This past weekend, our associates of Brennan Innovators attended a second educational conference in as many weeks. This time, the conference was located in our own city of St. Louis on the beautiful campus of Harris Stowe State University.

The International Reading Association-St. Louis Suburban Council held its annual Literacy-for-All Conference for college professors, teachers, reading specialists, parents, and others interested in promoting literacy in our schools and homes. The conference theme was "Literacy for the Future". It was a very good conference.

I had the great pleasure of presenting a workshop entitled "Strategies, Tools and More for Struggling Readers" at Saturday’s event. Not surprisingly, the number of workshop attendees was significant with every chair taken in the conference room. It was apparent that teachers and other literacy advocates most definitely want to know more about how they can help challenged readers experience more reading success. Attendees were also interested in apps that could help teach children how to read.

So today, we are dedicating this blog article to just those kinds of apps. Most of the links to follow here will each enable our readers to access an entire list of apps to help teach reading and related skills. The last URL, however, will connect to a single app for use with pre-school aged children.

Back to School with ADHD Apps

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 25 Agustus 2012 0 komentar
It is no surprise that as children and teens head back to school this fall, ADHD is very much apart of many American family life. The statistics for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) in the U.S. were updated last December (2011) by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Here are just some of the statistics collected and provided by the CDC from parent surveys:

• Parents report that approximately 9.5% or 5.4 million children 4-17 years of age have ever been diagnosed with ADHD, as of 2007.

• The percentage of children with a parent-reported ADHD diagnosis increased by 22% between 2003 and 2007.

• Rates of ADHD diagnosis increased an average of 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 and an average of 5.5% per year from 2003 to 2007.

• Boys (13.2%) were more likely than girls (5.6%) to have ever been diagnosed with ADHD.

• Rates of ADHD diagnosis increased at a greater rate among older teens as compared to younger children.

• The highest rates of parent-reported ADHD diagnosis were noted among children covered by Medicaid and multi-racial children.

• Prevalence of parent-reported ADHD diagnosis varied substantially by state, from a low of 5.6% in Nevada to a high of 15.6% in North Carolina.

(From Data & Statistics in the United States, December 2011: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/data.html)

So it is obvious that as this new school year begins, ADHD is a condition that more and more U.S. families are facing. What can parents and teachers do to help students manage this disorder so that academic success is possible for them?

We have just compiled a new list of ADHD apps that should especially help families with ADHD management this school year. We hope our readers will take a look at them and decide which ones might work best for their children, their students or perhaps even for themselves.

Ultimate Apps for Dyspraxia

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 18 Agustus 2012 0 komentar
The odds are such that you probably know someone with dyspraxia. Dyspraxia is a disorder in gross and/or fine motor skill development that affects 1 in 10 people. For some affected individuals, simple tasks such as using a knife and fork are problematic. Walking, skipping or catching a ball can be very difficult. For others, fine motor skills like writing or typing can cause frustration and a feeling of dejection.

Although dyspraxia is a life-long disorder, there is certainly some hope. Organizations such as the Dyspraxia Foundation (USA & UK) and others can help provide the latest information and research along with a social community for those interested in dyspraxia.

Early Symptoms of Dyspraxia
(From the Dyspraxia Foundation UK)

There are numerous early indications that a child may have dyspraxia. The following are some of the possible early symptoms:

• Irritable and difficult to comfort (from birth)
• Feeding and sleeping problems
• Delayed early motor development
• High levels of motor activity
• Repetitive behaviors
• Sensitive to high levels of noise
• Continued problems with development of feeding skills
• Toilet training may be delayed
• Avoids constructional toys such as jigsaws and Lego
• Delayed language development: single words not evident until age 3
• Highly emotional: easily distressed, frequent outbursts of uncontrolled behavior
• Concentration limited to 2 or 3 minutes

Adult Symptoms of Dyspraxia
(From the Dyspraxia Foundation UK)

Adults challenged with dyspraxia often find the routine tasks of daily life such as driving, household chores, cooking and grooming to be considerably difficult. They can also find coping at work might be hard. People with dyspraxia usually have a combination of problems in the following areas:

• Problems with gross motor co-ordination skills
• Issues with fine motor co-ordination skills
• Poorly established hand dominance
• Speech and language difficulties
• Problems with eye movements
• Perception issues (interpretation of the different senses)
• Challenges with learning, thought and memory
• Issues with emotions and behavior as a result of difficulties experienced

Many of the symptoms exhibited are not unique to people with dyspraxia, and even the most severe case will not have all the above characteristics. However, adults with dyspraxia do have a tendency to experience an unusual number of co-ordination and perceptual difficulties.

Today, there is the growing need for technology in helping those with dyspraxia. We have gathered together a list of apps that could help many affected children and adults as well. Here is a list of the most popular currently available at this writing:

Helpful Apps for Dyscalculia

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 11 Agustus 2012 0 komentar
The NCLD (National Center for Learning Disabilities) describes dyscalculia as “a wide range of lifelong learning disabilities involving math. There is no single type of math disability. Dyscalculia can vary from person to person. And, it can affect people differently at different stages of life.

Two major areas of weakness can contribute to math learning disabilities:

• Visual-spatial difficulties, which result in a person having trouble processing what the eye sees
• Language processing difficulties, which result in a person having trouble processing and making sense of what the ear hears

Using alternate learning methods, people with dyscalculia can achieve success.”

As with many learning challenges, specific strategies, accommodations, tools and other resources can enable affected students to experience more learning success. It is no different with dyscalculia. Because of this, and as a result of several inquiries at Brennan Innovators for teaching materials and resources for dyscalculia, we thought this would be a very good time to provide a few apps for teachers and parents of children with this learning challenge.
